In a previous entry, we mentioned the 60-year old maple tree standing tall over the backyard. Looking at the massive trunk, one can still see the holes where Grandpa tapped it to make maple syrup. The story goes, he boiled down the sugar in the (very small) kitchen, and much to Grandma’s dismay, the process created so much steam that the wall paper started to peel off the walls.  Every gardener has their favorite stories to tell from their harvest, from the zucchini the size of baseball bats, to tricking unsuspecting friends into biting into a wicked hot pepper.  There are also the sad tales of prized cucumber plants being eaten by hungry wildlife, or of years spent trying to get that darn blueberry bush to grow but failing every time. That’s part of the adventure of gardening, it requires perseverance. Some years are successful, others maybe not so much. Don’t let failure stop you from trying. So what if you lose a plant or 2, it happens. Don’t give up, because otherwise, you’re truly missing out!
