When you close your eyes and think about your favorite place to escape, what comes to mind? Maybe it’s a secluded lake watching the sun fall behind the trees as waves lazily roll on shore.  Maybe you escape to a lounge chair on the beach, the salt water and warm sun rays calming your mind. Or maybe you prefer a lean-to buried deep in the woods, far from civilization, crickets and birds as your only company, the mountains rising high above you. Wherever your spot, the environment around you soothes your soul.  My hope is that your backyard garden brings the same retreat!  For Christmas last year, I was given a hammock, which was meant to take camping. What could be better, lounging in the trees, listening to the waves on the lake and soaking in the summer breeze?  Sadly, with this year’s travel restrictions, getting to any of these dream spots seems to be proving rather difficult.  But there is so much to appreciate about what exists right outside our doors, the true beauty of a summer garden in full bloom. Soak it in! Isn’t that the point of gardening?  After working so hard to care for these beautiful plants, you have to enjoy the fruits of your labor!  I set up hammock under the shade of the big maple tree, and just took it all in – the striking red, magenta and yellow begonias standing tall, the cool white chamomile flowers swaying in the breeze, the light green young tomatoes starting to form, the deep purple petunias and lisianthus gracing the planters. Looking up, the beautiful blue sky was shining in amazing contrast with the deep green maple leaves. Closing my eyes, I could smell the basil as the soft breeze rustled the leaves.  Maybe you can’t physically get to your favorite vacation spots this year, but you can seek refuge in your own backyard oasis, appreciating the beauty of nature right outside your door.  Take time to appreciate what you have around you.  Your own garden can be truly refreshing!
