A sun-ripened tomato, plucked from the plant and promptly eaten, is one of summer’s greatest pleasures, in my opinion. One of my favorite varieties to grow is the yellow pear, a small yellow cherry tomato. Its flavor is a tad more mild than other varieties. It is incredibly prolific. As my husband and I finalized the garden layout and prepared spots for 9 tomato plants currently residing in our living room window, we looked down and spotted a surprise – 16 additional tomato plants that had sprouted from the seeds of fallen yellow pear tomatoes from the plant that grew in that spot the year before. Where on earth were we going to put 16 additional tomatoes in our small yard? Not wanting to let a good tomato plant go to waste, we made room for them in beds and pots around the patio. Lessons to be learned, tomatoes are pretty tough plants, they’re survivors! But also, don’t let a small space hinder your plans. It doesn’t take a lot of room to grow a big harvest. Use what you have to the fullest, and reap the rewards!

During the fall I chopped up all the pumpkins left over from Halloween and buried them in my garden. In the spring, after tilling that area twice and planting tomatoes I was surprised to see so many pumpkin plants emerging about 3 weeks later. I guess these seeds can be planted more that 1 inch deep and grow.
